Statistical understanding will lead to comparisons between data and wages which can eliminate discrimination. Numeric balancing will avoid cheating of wages which effects everyday life, i.e balancing a check book or banking accounts.

Students will not only learn about child labor and unsafe work conditions of the early 1900's but they will learn how these conditions affected the health of individuals and the environment. This information is critical becuase it make students aware of their rights as employes, how to treat and prevent the diseases. Students will also learn what effects the environment has on our present day global warming problem and we can do to prevent global warming.

This is an important topic for students to study because the only way society can protect its future is by knowing its past. Students will one day be a part of the workforce. By taking part in this lesson, students will know why labor laws exist and how they are protected.

They will recognize how the working class impacts their day to day lives now, and will note differences and similarities between various eras. Students will also see how literature and writing techniques can act as empowering tools to make a difference in the world. Furthermore, students will learn how literature is a lens through which to view the past and present with a critical eye. Literature, as a whole, has been an extreme influence on working class struggles.
